Plans...

So much for my weekend plans.  The stomach flu hit our house full force.  It was bad!  I went in to work today for the first time since Friday and I was called home.  The baby (yes I am referring to my 3 year old...haha) is sick.  He is the last one in the house to get sick and all I know is that it better not come back for round two!  My boss is super pissy that I'm not there, but truly I can't help it.

So, I am working on balances and debts for the end of the month posts :)  Plus, the house is a disaster!

P.S.  I paid my mortgage yesterday!  Just in time to pay it again in...two days.  The grace period is June 16th!  It's truly amazing how a measly $740 has put us so far behind it isn't even funny.

Happy Happy Joy Joy:

A 3 day weekend!  Yay :-)  Of course, the paper must be delivered, but I plan to basically just relax this weekend.

Of course I'd like to cross a few things off my to-do list and get the house cleaned.  I am also well on my way to making that extra $2,000 this month.  Of course the month is almost over, though.

Oh, and a funny story.  I got some cash from my husbands side gig in order to take an old co-worker out to lunch for his retirement.  I took $25 and had $8 and change left over so after I picked up the kids today I took them to Mc Donalds for Sundaes, a large fry, and 2 Mc Doubles.  Guess what?  The prices went up.  I was freaking out.  The sundaes used to be on the dollar menu and now they are $1.29 and the fry went from $1.99 to $2.19.  Well, now that I have no credit cards and I haven't used the debit for anything non-essential since the babies birthday party (bc I haven't paid the mortgage).  I so wish at that exact moment I had a cc, but instead the kids frantically searched the car for the .11 I needed.  Crisis averted.  lol.  Good thing I cut those cards up or they definitely would have been used today.  Ugh <--no willpower.  :(

We Did It:

That's right- we cut up every last credit card (except for 2 Discover cards that my sister is in possession of).  It was a lot of card and I put them all in a Ziploc bag because I am truly going to make a collage out of them :)

Now, it didn't come without resistance.  When hubby got home he said he was too tired to have the money talk, but I was persistent!  After we went over the balances and the grand total he needed another glass of wine (and he's not a wine drinker...hahaha).

Now we are on a long road to recovery.  I'll admit, I am a little freaked out because we won't have credit cards to rely on when cash flow sucks, but I think that will help us to make sure we are more careful and purposeful with our money.

It's still hard for us financially right this minute because we are still playing catch up with our mortgage and even when we do pay it, we turn around and another payment is due.  Ahhhh!  But we will get through it.  Honestly, if I didn't have the second job right now we'd be so screwed.  That's not a good place to be.

Marriage and Money:

Guess who is sitting down with the hubby tonight to go over finances?  ME ME ME!  And I am so excited.  My husband knows little to nothing about our finances and he basically asks me if he can use x, y, z card to buy x, y, z thing.  It's super annoying and I always feel like the bad guy when I say: NO.  But most of the time I dread saying no so I say yes and find a way to add it to a credit card or use up our extra money in checking and creating a shortage.

Well, no more.  He is coming home at 9:15 sharp and bring a bottle of brand new Pink Moscato while I wow him with our finances.  Of course, it's probably going to be a bad wow, but we can cut up the cards and move on from there!  I'm actually excited about this.

How does everyone else deal with finances in marriage?

Being Late on Payments:

So, you remember my post about paying our mortgage late?  Well, that has never happened to us since we became homeowners in 2008, so I was a little uneasy.  Turns out- it is way too easy to make payments late.  I called on Monday (the payment was due by Wednesday) and I spoke to a lady and told her that we had some "unexpected expenses" and we were going to be late on the payment.  She told me that there would be a late fee of $38.10 and we needed to pay by the 30th in order to keep it off of our credit report.  She must take these sorts of calls all day long because she acted like it was no big deal.

I called Honda before I called them to see what I could work out in regards to robbing Peter to pay Paul if need be and Honda let me in on a grace period I had no idea about, the ability to skip a payment and have it added to the end of the loan (at an interest rate other than our current .9% rate), or to move the payment due date to a different portion of the month.

I'll admit, I was impressed and a little scared about the options.  If I had known those before I might have gotten myself in more trouble.  So, the moral of the story?  Call your different companies to infer about options if you are having an off month and might be late on a payment.

When You Find Yourself In a Hole:

You can do one thing-- stop digging!  Oh how true that is.  And funny enough our pastor said it at church in relation to finances.  So, I have decided the best way to stop digging ourselves deeper into our hole, we must get rid of the credit cards.  I am going to cut them up and make a pretty picture or possibly a saying.  God knows there are enough of them to make a large portrait.

This month's events have opened my eyes to how close we are living on the edge of the whole paycheck to paycheck thing.  Happy Friday, everyone.
